Identifying Characteristics:

Seed:  elliptical shaped seed with awns; rachilla round with sucker mouth; tan in color; 4 to 7 mm in length

Seedling:  leaves rolled in whorl; leaf blades are flat and glossy with barbed, rough leaf margins; sharply pointed blades; blunt, hairy auricles; truncate, membranous ligule

Mature Plant: bunch-type growth habit, but forms sod with rhizomes; narrow to broad panicle with spikelets bunched on short peduncles; spikelets contain 6 to 8 florets

Method of Propagation: seed, rhizomes

Life Cycle: cool-season perennial
