Identifying Characteristics:
Seed: small and round; dark purple to black in color; 3 noticeable ridges near hilum
Seedling: deeply lobed rosette leaves; dull gray appearance
Mature Plant: will “bolt” as it enters the reproductive stage; lanceolate, clasping leaves on the upper stem; small, yellow flowers; pods and peduncles similar in length; “beak” at the end of pods
Method of Propagation: seed
Life Cycle: cool-season annual
Similar Species: mustard – compare pods. Mustard will generally have a knob at the end of the beak
